Ecstatic Dance is een vrije vorm van dans. Puur, simpel, en juist daardoor zo krachtig en transformerend. In de bijzondere setting van de Sint Janskerk nodigen L'Okapi en Musica Sacra je uit voor een collectieve ervaring van beweging, overgave en verbinding.
Onder begeleiding van DJ Ananya Samyt ontstaat een muzikale reis waarin je niet hoeft te presteren, te praten of iets te zijn. Alleen aanwezig zijn is genoeg. We verwelkomen je in een warme, open bedding waarin je vrij bent om jezelf te uiten op een manier die goed voelt in het moment.
Richtlijnen
Om samen een veilige en gedragen sfeer te creëren, hanteren we een paar belangrijke richtlijnen:
Vanaf het moment dat je de zaal binnenkomt, spreken we niet meer met woorden. Tot de eindcirkel wordt er ook op de gang en op het toilet niet gesproken.
We dansen op blote voeten, ieder op zijn of haar eigen unieke manier. Sokken of dansschoentjes zijn toegestaan.
We komen zo puur mogelijk: dus geen alcohol, drugs of sterke parfums.
Geen telefoons, camera's of andere afleiding tijdens de dans.

Een hedendaags ritueel waarin muziek, beweging en gemeenschap samenkomen en waarin extase niet iets is om na te jagen, maar iets dat kan ontstaan wanneer je je volledig overgeeft aan het moment.
L'Okapi is een Maastrichts productiehuis en een community op het snijvlak van kunst, zelfexpressie en gemeenschapsvorming. Vanuit de overtuiging dat iedereen een verhaal te vertellen heeft, creëert L'Okapi ruimtes waarin jongvolwassenen elkaar kunnen ontmoeten, kunnen creëren en zichzelf kunnen laten zien. Met concerten, workshops, performances en community-events brengt L'Okapi mensen en jongeren samen die zich niet altijd vanzelfsprekend thuis voelen binnen het culturele veld. Authenticiteit, verbinding en persoonlijke groei staan daarbij centraal. Nieuwe stemmen krijgen een podium, creatieve experimenten worden aangemoedigd en kunst wordt ingezet als middel om elkaar en onszelf beter te begrijpen.
In opdracht van Musica Sacra ontwikkelde L'Okapi dit programma waarin ontmoeting, verstilling, expressie, extase en collectieve beleving samenkomen.
Praktisch
Draag comfortabele kleding in laagjes. Je gaat zweten, dus zorg voor een goede hygiëne.
Tickets zijn niet retourneerbaar, tenzij het event wordt geannuleerd. Je kunt je ticket doorverkopen via Ticketswap.
Laat waardevolle spullen thuis. De dansvloer is een heldere, geconcentreerde ruimte.

Ecstatic Dance is a free form of dance. Pure, simple, and powerful and transformative precisely because of it. In the special setting of the Sint Janskerk, L'Okapi and Musica Sacra invite you to a collective experience of movement, surrender and connection.
Guided by DJ Ananya Samyt, a musical journey unfolds in which you do not have to perform, speak or be anything. Simply being present is enough. We welcome you into a warm, open space where you are free to express yourself in whatever way feels right in the moment.
Guidelines
To create a safe and supportive atmosphere together, we follow a few important guidelines:
From the moment you enter the hall, we no longer speak with words. Until the closing circle, there is also no talking in the hallway or restrooms.
We dance barefoot, each in their own unique way. Socks or dance shoes are allowed.
We arrive as pure as possible: no alcohol, drugs or strong perfumes.
No phones, cameras or other distractions during the dance.

A contemporary ritual where music, movement and community come together, and where ecstasy is not something to chase, but something that can arise when you fully surrender to the moment.
L'Okapi is a Maastricht production house and a community at the meeting point of art, self-expression and community building. Guided by the belief that everyone has a story to tell, L'Okapi creates spaces where young adults can meet, create and show themselves. Through concerts, workshops, performances and community events, L'Okapi brings together people and young adults who do not always feel at home within the cultural field. Authenticity, connection and personal growth are at the heart of it all. New voices are given a stage, creative experiments are encouraged, and art becomes a way to understand each other and ourselves a little better.
Commissioned by Musica Sacra, L'Okapi developed this programme where encounter, stillness, expression, ecstasy and collective experience come together.
Practical
Wear layered, comfy clothes. You will sweat, so please take care of proper hygiene.

De Duitse mystica Hildegard van Bingen (1098-1179) stond al in haar eigen tijd bekend om haar visies en visioenen. Ze correspondeerde met de groten der aarde en was daardoor een uitzonderlijk invloedrijke vrouw. Bovendien voorzag Hildegard haar eigen teksten van muziek. Dat levert een repertoire op dat sterk geworteld is in de gregoriaanse traditie, maar tegelijk opvalt door zijn grote toonomvang en uitgesproken poëtische kracht. In de combinatie van visioen, tekst en klank is ook een vorm van extase aanwezig: een gerichtheid voorbij het alledaagse, die in Hildegards muziek sterk waarneembaar wordt en die Psallentes in de uitvoering verder aanscherpt.
Vijfenzeventig gezangen zijn ons van Hildegard overgeleverd, met als belangrijkste bron de zogenoemde Dendermonde Codex, een twaalfde-eeuws handschrift dat vandaag in Leuven wordt bewaard. Uit dit handschrift kozen de zangeressen van Psallentes een reeks gezangen ter ere van de heilige Ursula. Met antifonen, waaronder O rubor sanguinis, responsoria, een sequentia en een hymne, het opzwepende Cum vox sanguinis, bouwen zij een krachtig klankbeeld op. Het resultaat is een intens muzikaal gebeuren, waarin eensgezind en met toenemend engagement de lotgevallen van Ursula en haar reisgezellinnen worden bezongen.
Volgens de legende was Ursula een koningsdochter die niet wilde trouwen voor ze een bedevaart naar Rome had gemaakt. Samen met de elfduizend maagden die haar vergezelden, werd ze, nog steeds volgens de legende, in de buurt van Keulen vermoord. Hildegard bezingt Ursula en haar gezellinnen niet als verre figuranten in een oud verhaal, maar als een groep sterke vrouwen die ook vandaag nog tot ons spreken.
Dit concert wordt ingericht door L'Okapi.

The German mystic Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was known in her own time for her insights and visions. She corresponded with the great figures of her age and was, as a result, an exceptionally influential woman. Hildegard also set her own texts to music. This produced a repertoire deeply rooted in the Gregorian tradition, yet striking for its wide vocal range and outspoken poetic power. In the combination of vision, text and sound there is also a form of ecstasy: a reaching beyond the everyday that becomes strongly present in Hildegard's music and that Psallentes sharpens further in performance.
Seventy-five chants by Hildegard have come down to us, the most important source being the so-called Dendermonde Codex, a twelfth-century manuscript now kept in Leuven. From this manuscript, the singers of Psallentes chose a series of chants in honour of Saint Ursula. With antiphons, among them O rubor sanguinis, responsories, a sequence and a hymn, the rousing Cum vox sanguinis, they build a powerful soundscape. The result is an intense musical event in which the fortunes of Ursula and her travelling companions are sung with unity and growing engagement.
According to legend, Ursula was a king's daughter who did not want to marry before making a pilgrimage to Rome. Together with the eleven thousand virgins who accompanied her, she was, still according to legend, murdered near Cologne. Hildegard does not sing of Ursula and her companions as distant figures in an old story, but as a group of strong women who still speak to us today.

In de tweede helft van de 6e eeuw liet bisschop Monulfus bij het graf van St. Servaas een eerste kerk bouwen, die in de 8e eeuw door bisschop Gondulfus werd vervangen door een nieuwe, driebeukige basilica. In die tijd is er ook voor het eerst sprake van een klooster. Wellicht nog einde 10e eeuw, maar in ieder geval begin 11e eeuw begon de bouw van opnieuw een volledig nieuwe kerk. Tussen ca. 1000 en en het midden van de 13e eeuw kreeg de huidige kerk zijn hoofdvorm in ruwweg drie bouwcampagnes. Belangrijk daarbij was de steun van de Duitse keizers, die duurde tot de overname van de keizerlijke rechten in 1204 door de Hertog van Brabant. De werkzaamheden kwamen tot stand onder supervisie van opeenvolgende proosten Geldulfus, Humbertus en Gerard van Are. De verbouwingen waren het gevolg van het groeiend belang van het gebouw als grafkerk en pelgrimskerk, maar ook van de functies als imperiale eigenkerk, kapittelkerk en parochiekerk (tot ca. 1200). Eve Arnold in Maastricht: kijken om te begrijpen
Vanaf zaterdag 19 september opent Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof de grote overzichtstentoonstelling All about Eve. Tot en met 31 januari 2027 zie je 130 zwart-wit- en kleurenfoto's van de Amerikaanse fotojournalist Eve Arnold (1912-2012), met de nadruk op haar werk uit de jaren vijftig, zestig en zeventig.
Wie was Eve Arnold?
In 1951 werd Arnold als eerste vrouw lid van Magnum Photos, het meest invloedrijke fotoagentschap ter wereld. Ruim vijftig jaar lang fotografeerde ze filmsterren als Marilyn Monroe en Marlene Dietrich, maar ook modeshows in Harlem, Malcolm X en het dagelijks leven in landen als Afghanistan, China, India en Zuid-Afrika. Een wereldster en een onbekende kregen van haar dezelfde aandacht.
Waarom zij ons vandaag nog iets te zeggen heeft
Arnold gebruikte haar camera om te begrijpen, niet om te oordelen. In een tijd waarin we elkaar vooral scrollend en in een paar seconden beoordelen, is dat een radicale keuze. Haar foto's laten zien wat er gebeurt als je de tijd neemt, echt nieuwsgierig bent en iemand de ruimte geeft om zichzelf te zijn.
Ze liet zich ook niet tegenhouden door een wereld die niet op haar zat te wachten. Als vrouw in een vak vol mannen koos ze haar eigen onderwerpen en haar eigen blik. Dat maakt haar een rolmodel voor iedereen die zijn eigen stem zoekt, met of zonder camera.
Bij L'Okapi geloven we dat creatieve zelfexpressie begint bij goed kijken: naar de wereld om je heen, en naar jezelf. Eve Arnold laat zien hoe dat eruitziet.

Eve Arnold in Maastricht: looking to understand
On Saturday 19 September, Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof opens the major retrospective All about Eve. Until 31 January 2027, you can see 130 black-and-white and colour photographs by American photojournalist Eve Arnold (1912-2012), with a focus on her work from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
Who was Eve Arnold?
In 1951 Arnold became the first woman to join Magnum Photos, the world's most influential photo agency. For more than fifty years she photographed film stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich, but also fashion shows in Harlem, Malcolm X, and everyday life in countries including Afghanistan, China, India and South Africa. A global star and a stranger received the same attention from her.
Why she still speaks to us today
Arnold used her camera to understand, not to judge. In a time when we mostly size each other up in a few seconds of scrolling, that is a radical choice. Her photographs show what happens when you take your time, stay genuinely curious and give someone room to be themselves.
She also refused to be held back by a world that wasn't waiting for her. As a woman in a field full of men, she chose her own subjects and her own way of seeing. That makes her a role model for anyone looking for their own voice, with or without a camera.
At L'Okapi we believe creative self-expression starts with looking closely: at the world around you, and at yourself. Eve Arnold shows what that looks like.

At L’Okapi, a beautiful idea was shared by our Role Model Arachon Besseling to start a series of workshop led by men and for men - working with the body, mind, emotions and the connection between themselves and others. Finding what it means to be men in a meaningful and personal way. All for the purpose of a more connected and safe society, for everybody.
Nowadays, some men are often afraid to speak up, express themselves fully, still holding on to the status quo which hurts them directly - very often leading to mental health struggles or worse.
The second workshop, will take place on the September 30th at 19.00 in Bankastudios and will be led by Arachon Besseling.
“In my personal journey, I have learned and experienced that life is not (only) about development, but rather more about unraveling. Shedding all those layers of programming and conditioning. Breaking down that wall that has long served as a defense mechanism. Because behind that wall lies my true 'SELF'!”

L’Okapi Lads Pilot #3

At L’Okapi, a beautiful idea was shared by our Role Model Arachon Besseling to start a series of workshop led by men and for men - working with the body, mind, emotions and the connection between themselves and others. Finding what it means to be men in a meaningful and personal way. All for the purpose of a more connected and safe society, for everybody.
Nowadays, some men are often afraid to speak up, express themselves fully, still holding on to the status quo which hurts them directly - very often leading to mental health struggles or worse.
The second workshop, will take place on the September 30th at 19.00 in Bankastudios and will be led by Arachon Besseling.
“In my personal journey, I have learned and experienced that life is not (only) about development, but rather more about unraveling. Shedding all those layers of programming and conditioning. Breaking down that wall that has long served as a defense mechanism. Because behind that wall lies my true 'SELF'!”

We beginnen met een community walk. We wandelen samen, zonder telefoon, met onderweg een leuke route en na afloop schuiven we aan voor een gezellig diner.
Gewoon samen bewegen, buiten zijn en elkaar ontmoeten.

Wat gebeurt er wanneer jongeren de ruimte krijgen om hun eigen verhaal te vertellen? Tijdens het Community Concert brengt de L'Okapi-community muziek, woorden en persoonlijke verhalen samen in een intieme avond vol verbinding. Vanuit verschillende achtergronden en ervaringen nemen zij je mee in wat hen beweegt, raakt en inspireert.
Verwacht een avond die dichtbij komt: eerlijk, kwetsbaar en oprecht. Een moment om te luisteren naar elkaar, stil te staan bij wat ons verbindt en nieuwe perspectieven te ontdekken. Een concert waarin niet alleen de artiesten, maar ook het publiek deel wordt van een gemeenschap.
L'Okapi is een Maastrichts productiehuis en een community op het snijvlak van kunst, zelfexpressie en gemeenschapsvorming. Vanuit de overtuiging dat iedereen een verhaal te vertellen heeft, creëert L'Okapi ruimtes waarin jongvolwassenen elkaar kunnen ontmoeten, kunnen creëren en zichzelf kunnen laten zien. Met concerten, workshops, performances en community-events brengt L'Okapi mensen en jongeren samen die zich niet altijd vanzelfsprekend thuis voelen binnen het culturele veld. Authenticiteit, verbinding en persoonlijke groei staan daarbij centraal. Nieuwe stemmen krijgen een podium, creatieve experimenten worden aangemoedigd en kunst wordt ingezet als middel om elkaar en onszelf beter te begrijpen.
In opdracht van Musica Sacra ontwikkelde L'Okapi dit programma waarin ontmoeting, verstilling, expressie, extase en collectieve beleving samenkomen.

What happens when young people are given the space to tell their own story? During the Community Concert, the L'Okapi community brings music, words and personal stories together in an intimate evening full of connection. From different backgrounds and experiences, they take you into what moves, touches and inspires them.
Expect an evening that comes close: honest, open and sincere. A moment to listen to one another, to pause at what connects us and to discover new perspectives. A concert in which not only the artists, but also the audience becomes part of a community.
L'Okapi is a Maastricht production house and a community at the meeting point of art, self-expression and community building. Guided by the belief that everyone has a story to tell, L'Okapi creates spaces where young adults can meet, create and show themselves. Through concerts, workshops, performances and community events, L'Okapi brings together people and young adults who do not always feel at home within the cultural field. Authenticity, connection and personal growth are at the heart of it all. New voices are given a stage, creative experiments are encouraged, and art becomes a way to understand each other and ourselves a little better.
Commissioned by Musica Sacra, L'Okapi developed this programme where encounter, stillness, expression, ecstasy and collective experience come together.

Verhalen van mensen over hun mentale gezondheid blijven veelal in de taboesfeer. Deze theatervoorstelling is een samenstelling van persoonlijke levensverhalen. Geen gespeelde rollen, maar mensen die hun waargebeurde ervaringen met je delen; ervaringen van pijn, verdriet, geluk en vreugde.
Bijzondere verhalen van bijzondere mensen; ze geven een inkijkje in hun persoonlijke thema’s, maar houden ons ook een spiegel voor over maatschappelijke thema’s zoals eenzaamheid, kwetsbaarheid en de zoektocht naar jezelf kunnen zijn. De verhalen worden in artistieke vormen gepresenteerd. Denk hierbij aan een verhaal, een lied, muziek, toneel, gedicht.
Ditmaal zijn het de verhalen van Chantal Horsmans, Arachon Besseling, Kimberley Pisters, Tim Gladdines en Joanne Vertommen.

What happens when two choirs that have never met get a single afternoon to make something together?
At 18:00, you find out.
Ghanni Maastricht and Les Perles Noires from Liège open the Saturday evening of Jazz au Broukay with three songs. One from Ghanni's repertoire. One from that of Les Perles Noires. And one they learned together that very afternoon, guided by Charlotte Haesen.
So what you hear is not a programme rehearsed over months. It is what emerges when people from two cities, two languages and two musical traditions decide to listen to one another.
Improvisation, collective singing, and the power of voices finding each other for the first time.
Who
Ghanni Maastricht, a collective of singers who use music as a language of connection and hope. Regular visitors and participants at L'Okapi Productions.
Les Perles Noires, a choir of some thirty voices from Beyne-Heusay that has performed and explored polyphonic music since 2013, under the direction of Elisabeth Bonmariage.

Two choirs, a community, one afternoon and a shared language that needs no words.
On Saturday 22 August, the L'Okapi Community comes together with two choirs from the Euregion: Ghanni Maastricht and Les Perles Noires from Liège. Together with everyone who feels like joining, we spend an afternoon exploring voice, breath, presence and collective improvisation.
No sheet music. No auditions. Just listening as the foundation.
What we do We begin with a vocal and body warm-up then we sing in the circle: improvising without notes, letting the sound emerge from what happens around us. Next, each choir teaches the other a song from its own repertoire. Those songs are performed live that same evening on the terrace, opening the festival programme.
After the workshop, we all sit down together for a community dinner.
Facilitator Charlotte Haesen, singer-songwriter, vocal coach and founder of L'Okapi Productions. She developed a methodology for experience-based workshops, grounded in Expressive Arts Therapy, positive psychology and peer-to-peer facilitation.
Elisabeth Bonmariage, conductor of Les Perles Noires since 2013 and music teacher. Her direction is built on mutual listening and musical precision, creating a space where every voice counts.

We willen samen met jullie verkennen wat er vanuit het Toon Hermans Huis kan ontstaan voor jongvolwassenen. We weten nog niet precies hoe dat eruit ziet en waar jullie behoeftes echt liggen. Juist daarom beginnen we met deze avond.
Eten, muziek, en een open gesprek over wat jou zou helpen.
Wat heb jij nodig? Wat mis je? Wat zou jou of iemand die je kent echt iets geven? Geen therapie. Geen zware sfeer. Gewoon eerlijk samen zijn met mensen die begrijpen wat jij bedoelt. Je bepaalt zelf wat je wel of niet deelt. Luisteren is ook helemaal oké.

For the first L'Okapi Come As You Are Night ever, we're celebrating the Week van de Limburgse Popmuziek with a night dedicated to the musicians who shape our region. The Night is a tribute to Kurt Cobain's song and to everyone who picks up an instrument and shows up, exactly as they are for us here in our region. Expect a workshop with one of Limburg's most prominent managers about how musicians actually make a living in 2026 (spoiler: not by sinking 10K into a CD or touring at a loss), a collection of Maastricht's finest songwriters with a sharp and personal talk in between, and an open stage where Limburg's talent takes over for the rest of the night. Bring your guitar, your voice, your courage.
The evening opens with a workshop and a community dinner, and closes with an open jam.

Ecstatic Dance Night - DJ Sefrijn

Ecstatic Dance is een vrije vorm van dans. Puur, simpel, en juist daardoor zo krachtig en transformerend.
We verwelkomen je in een warme, open bedding waarin je vrij bent om jezelf te uiten op een manier die goed voelt in het moment.
Om samen een veilige en gedragen sfeer te creëren, hanteren we een paar belangrijke richtlijnen:
* Vanaf het moment dat je de zaal binnenkomt, spreken we niet meer met woorden. Tot de eind-cirkel wordt er ook op de gang en toiletten niet meer gesproken.
* We dansen op blote voeten, ieder op zijn of haar eigen unieke manier. Indien gewenst zijn sokken of dansschoentjes wel toegestaan.
* We komen zo puur mogelijk: dus geen alcohol, drugs of sterke parfums.
* Geen telefoons, camera’s of andere afleiding tijdens de dans.

During Mental Wellbeing Week 2026, L'Okapi invites you to an evening where poetry, music and theatre come together around the themes of resilience, self-direction and mental wellbeing.
The evening features:
Live performances by Julia Warren & Daryl Grootfaam (spoken word & music), Aga Bukowska (music), Leonie Belle (spoken word), and the Amezian Caravacan Duo , closing the night with an exclusive performance celebrating the release of their brand-new album.
Following the performances, join an interactive Q&A with singer-songwriter Lau Noah, director Charlotte Haesen, and therapist Joanne Vertommen exploring how art and creative self-expression shape personal growth and mental wellbeing.
